Tara Connelly Leporati, 78, of Moseley, VA went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024. She is survived by her husband James of 56 years, daughter Jennifer (husband Kevin) and son Scott (wife Laura), her four grandchildren Caitlin Fitzgerald, James Fitzgerald, Avery Leporati, and Peyton Leporati, her sisters Lynn Leporati and Moira Connelly and brother Kevin Connelly. She was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Dorothy Connelly along with her brothers Brian and Barry Connelly.
One of six children, Tara was born January 27th, 1946 in Elmhurst, NY to Eugene and Dorothy Connelly. She was raised in Greenlawn, NY and her family also had a home near the end of Long Island on the water in Sag Harbor, NY where they spent their summers. She attended Marymount University in Arlington, VA. She met her husband James in Southampton, NY in August of 1966 and it was true love at first sight. They were engaged shortly after in October of the same year and married in May the following year in 1967. In her early years of motherhood, Tara was a member on the Committee for the Handicapped in her local school district where she served for 10 years. Throughout those years, her influence on the committee was significant as she frequently battled (and won) against the conventional wisdom at the time, to do what was best for her son Scott who was born deaf. Professionally, Tara had a successful business career in sales working for Ruben H. Donnelly advertising agency in Manhattan and at Cablevision and TV 55 on Long Island.
Tara was also involved in their family golf ball marker business. This business venture afforded Tara and Jim the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and North America. Tara and Jim have had a 2nd home in Vermont for almost 40 years, first in Ludlow/Okemo and now in Quechee. Vermont has held a lot of special memories for them, including skiing, large family get-togethers, golf, visiting breweries, taking day trips, and the formation of many lifelong friendships.
Tara loved the ocean, being on the water, animals, travel, reading, puzzles, and crafting. But what Tara loved most was her family. She loved being a wife to James. She loved being a mom to Jen and Scott and being "Gram" to Caitlin, James, Avery, and Peyton.
A funeral mass will be held at St John Neumann Catholic Church (2480 Batterson Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139) on Friday, March 8th at 10 am with a reception to follow at 11:30 am at Scott and Laura Leporati's house. All are welcome. A private burial will take place in Connecticut at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Brain Foundation or Autism Speaks.
