George Alexander Weimer Jr died after a long illness on September 6, 2023. He is survived by his mother, Wilma Anne Rose Weimer of Powhatan, his beloved wife Svetlana, children Molly, Alex, Elizabeth, and Charlie Weimer and Rebecca Weimer Lovato (James); a granddaughter Penny; sisters Peggy Weimer Parrish and Martha Weimer O’Brien (Tom); nephews Jay and Alexander Parrish and Toby O’Brien; and many cousins and friends.
Alex was born in Clovis NM on October 23, 1953. His childhood was spent in Gretna, VA, Bethany WV, and Greenville NC. Alex was graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham VA where he was valedictorian. He was awarded a Bachelors degree in English from Duke University, a Master’s from VCU, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Richmond.
He enjoyed a long and varied career, teaching high school English in North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida, practicing law in Warsaw, VA, and teaching English and legal classes at Strayer University and Virginia State University. He authored the textbook The Art and Science of Business Writing.
Alex was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, camping, fishing, and boating. He always had at least one book he was reading and he created many wonderful culinary delights. He converted to the Catholic Church later in life and was an involved member of St. John Neumann’s Catholic Church. From hiking the Appalachian Trail to living in Russia, he enjoyed life to its fullest.
Visitation will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 17 from 6 – 7 pm, and a Christian wake service will be held immediately following at 7 pm. On Wednesday, October 18, there will be a mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. followed by entombment in the columbarium and a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John Neumann Human Concerns Fund, 2480 Batterson Road, Powhatan, VA 23139. In lieu of food, contributions may be made to the Powhatan Food Pantry, 2500 Batterson Road, Powhatan, VA 23139.
